Decorating Cambridge homes, old and new
Original plaster, joinery and modern extensions can sit within the same house. We assess each surface separately and discuss suitable finishes before work begins.
Parking and access in the city
Tell us about permit parking, shared entrances and restricted access when arranging a quotation. These details help us plan equipment and keep routes clear.
Newnham
Newnham has substantial Victorian and Edwardian homes alongside smaller houses and flats. Tall rooms, decorative cornices and panelled doors call for patient preparation rather than heavy coats that soften the detail. A stairwell scheme needs to consider the landing above as well as the entrance below. Where original sash windows survive, we assess the paint and timber before agreeing repairs and decoration, keeping opening edges clear and choosing an appropriate finish for exposed external joinery.
Chesterton
Chesterton stretches from an older village centre towards later residential streets, with cottages, terraces and twentieth-century family houses. That variety makes the condition of the individual building more useful than its postcode when choosing materials. An older hallway may need plaster repairs and lining before papering, while a later semi may chiefly need washable walls and refreshed skirting. Outside, checking window sills and door frames during preparation helps establish whether timber repairs should precede painting.
Cherry Hinton
Cherry Hinton retains an older village centre within a much wider area of twentieth-century and newer housing. For family homes, practical decorating can mean resilient finishes in kitchens, careful preparation around stair rails and a room order that leaves somewhere usable each evening. Older cottages need a different assessment, particularly where solid walls or irregular plaster survive. We discuss the existing surfaces first, so a contemporary colour scheme does not depend on covering unsuitable or unstable material.
Romsey
Romsey's Victorian terraces are closely associated with the streets around Mill Road. Their compact entrances, narrow stairs and adjoining rooms reward a coordinated choice of wall and woodwork colours. Preparation around old picture rails and door mouldings keeps those details distinct. Where a front door opens close to the pavement, exterior work also needs a sensible plan for equipment and passers-by. We discuss access before starting rather than assuming there is space beside every frontage.
Trumpington
Trumpington includes an established village centre as well as extensive newer neighbourhoods towards the southern edge of Cambridge. In an older house, retained joinery and plaster may guide the specification; in a recently built home, the priorities can be dry plaster, minor settlement and a more practical finish than the original emulsion. Open-plan rooms benefit from checking colours across changing daylight. Our separate Trumpington page covers decorating considerations for the village and its newer housing in more detail.
Arbury
Much of Arbury's housing dates from the twentieth century, with family houses and flats that suit straightforward, practical decoration. Broad wall surfaces can show old filling and roller marks, so a change of colour often needs more preparation than expected. We check whether existing paper is secure before proposing lining or repainting. For busy entrances and shared family spaces, the aim is a finish that can be cleaned without making every wall unnecessarily shiny or losing an even appearance.
Castle
Castle Hill and the streets around it contain older buildings alongside later homes and flats. Historic surroundings make it worth checking designation and any relevant restrictions before changing exterior colours or materials. Inside, older plaster and layers of paint on joinery need a measured approach; stripping everything back is not automatically the best answer. We can work to an agreed specification, retaining sound material and discussing uncertain surfaces before preparation proceeds around delicate features or previously repaired areas.
Petersfield
Petersfield includes closely spaced terraces near Mill Road and Parker's Piece, together with converted flats and later accommodation. Decorating a compact home here often involves moving furniture in stages and protecting the route between rooms. Where a house has become several flats, shared access and working hours deserve early discussion. Within older rooms, a restrained repair to plaster, clean edges at skirting and carefully hung wallpaper can improve the finish without pretending the building has perfectly straight modern walls.

Questions from Cambridge
Can you plan decorating around a narrow Romsey entrance?
Yes. Tell us whether there is rear access so we can arrange deliveries, floor protection and a clear passage through the house.
Does a Castle Hill address automatically mean listed status?
No. Check the individual property's designation and any required permissions; we can then discuss decorating within the agreed requirements.
