Period houses and substantial detached homes are an important part of Little Shelford's residential character. Where rooms retain sash windows, panelled doors or decorative cornices, the preparation should preserve those details rather than bury them beneath heavy paint. Sash window restoration and local woodwork repairs can sit alongside interior redecoration, subject to the condition of the joinery. Tall walls also reward careful surface preparation before a flat painted finish or patterned wallpaper is applied. Not every house needs a traditional scheme: later additions can take a simpler treatment, linking old and new through compatible colours without making every room identical.
Stapleford
Below the Gog Magog Hills, Stapleford's older properties and mid-century housing call for more than one approach to decorating. A family house might need a full refresh of ceilings, walls and woodwork, with tougher finishes on stair rails and busy corridors. Older rooms may instead require patch repairs to plaster or the removal of unsuitable wallpaper before decisions about colour. We can plan the sequence around occupied bedrooms, furniture and access between floors. If an extension has changed the layout, decorating adjoining spaces together can help the new room feel connected, while retaining original features elsewhere in the house.
Whittlesford
Timber-framed buildings and older brick houses give Whittlesford's historic centre a distinct character, alongside the later homes beyond it. Traditional construction makes product choice important: existing lime plaster, for example, should not be treated as though it were modern plasterboard. Repairs and breathable finishes need to suit the actual substrate. Original doors and window surrounds can also benefit from patient preparation rather than heavy filling. In newer properties, practical work might include improving wall finishes, wallpapering a bedroom or repainting a staircase. Any proposal affecting a listed building should be checked for consent requirements before materials and methods are settled.
Duxford
Beyond its association with aviation, Duxford has a historic village core and a broad range of later housing. An older cottage may need sensitive plaster restoration and careful treatment of painted joinery, while a modern house can lend itself to a complete change of colour. Hallways and staircases are useful places to consider durability, especially around handrails, corners and doors. Exterior decorating begins with checking for loose coatings and timber damage rather than choosing the topcoat first. If original features remain indoors, wallpaper and paint can be selected to complement them without turning every room into a period scheme.
Pampisford
Older houses and cottages contribute much of Pampisford's village character, with traditional materials influencing how decorating should be approached. Wallpaper can work well in rooms with established proportions, but its success depends on stable plaster, properly prepared corners and careful setting out. Painted doors and other joinery deserve the same attention, particularly where earlier coatings have softened moulded details. For exterior work, access and the condition of timber should be assessed together before a programme is agreed. A modest refresh might cover just a bedroom and landing; a wider scheme could bring repairs, wall finishes and woodwork into one coordinated plan.
Babraham
The older cottages and houses in Babraham sit close to the research campus, yet their decorating requirements remain those of individual homes rather than a single building type. Traditional walls may need compatible patch repairs before any new finish is considered. Small rooms can benefit from well-planned colour transitions, while retained doors, skirtings and window surrounds provide details worth keeping visible. Exterior work might involve repainting sound joinery or repairing localised timber damage first. We would discuss access, protection of neighbouring surfaces and the order of work at the outset, alongside any restrictions that apply to a listed property.
