Paints and Materials for Decorating Your Home

Choosing materials is about more than finding a colour. We consider the background, existing coating, moisture, wear and the finish you want to live with. A hallway wall has different demands from a ceiling, and exposed timber needs a different approach from interior plaster.

These are some of the brands we often use when their products suit the work. Each range includes different formulations, so the precise product matters. We follow the relevant preparation and application guidance rather than assuming everything carrying one brand name behaves in the same way.

Farrow & Ball

We often use Farrow & Ball for interior colour schemes across walls, ceilings and woodwork. The choice of finish matters alongside the shade: some rooms need more resistance to everyday marks, while elsewhere the appearance of a lower sheen may be the priority. We discuss those differences before specifying the paint.

A sample viewed in your room is more useful than a colour seen only on a screen. Light from windows, nearby furniture and evening lamps can all change how a shade appears. We also check the recommended primer or undercoat for the chosen system.

Little Greene

We often use Little Greene for interior walls and joinery where its colours and available finishes fit the brief. It can be useful when planning related shades across several rooms, but suitability still depends on the surface and how the space is used.

We discuss the required sheen and cleaning needs rather than selecting by colour alone. Existing gloss, bare timber and repaired plaster each need their own preparation before the finishing coats go on.

Dulux Trade

We often use Dulux Trade for everyday interior and exterior decorating tasks, choosing from the appropriate ranges for walls, ceilings, woodwork or masonry. Trade paint is not one universal coating: the specification must still match the background.

In busy areas, we consider resistance to cleaning and scuffing. On ceilings, an even appearance in changing light may be more important. Correct preparation and coverage remain essential whichever finish is selected.

Zinsser AllCoat

We often use Zinsser AllCoat on suitable exterior surfaces where the particular formulation meets the job requirements. It can be considered for a range of backgrounds, but we check compatibility and the manufacturer’s guidance before deciding on the system.

Loose paint, dirt and unsound repairs need attention first. Drying conditions and recoat times also matter outside. The product choice does not remove the need to assess bare patches, repair timber or wait for suitable weather.

Tikkurila

We often use Tikkurila where a product from its range suits the required painted finish. Depending on the specification, that may include interior surfaces or joinery. We select for the actual substrate and application method, not simply for the brand.

For detailed woodwork, we consider how the paint levels, the desired sheen and how the finished surface will be used. Drying and curing are different stages, so we explain when newly painted items are ready for normal handling.

Toupret

We often use Toupret fillers to make good appropriate cracks, holes and surface defects before decorating. Different repair depths and backgrounds call for different products. Exterior repairs need a filler intended for those conditions rather than an interior product used out of convenience.

Filler is only one stage of preparation. It must dry as required, be shaped or sanded appropriately and receive any necessary primer. It cannot solve ongoing movement, damp or an unsound background.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same colour look different in two finishes?

Yes. Sheen, texture and lighting affect its appearance. Compare suitable samples in the room before choosing.

Will a premium paint hide poor preparation?

No. Loose coatings, uneven repairs and contamination still need attention before the finishing paint is applied.

Are all fillers suitable for outdoor repairs?

No. We choose a product for the background, repair depth and exposure, following its application guidance.

Do these brand names imply a commercial relationship?

No. They describe materials we use where appropriate, not an affiliation, accreditation or partnership.
