Wallpapering and wall coverings

Wallpapering and Wall Coverings in Cambridge

Wallpaper is less forgiving than paint. Seams, pattern matching and the condition of the wall underneath all show, especially with expensive designer papers. That is why we take time over every stage.

A single feature wall and a full stairwell of designer paper ask for the same patience: careful measuring, planned drops and a wall that is genuinely ready.

Papers we hang

Lining paper, standard and heavyweight papers, paste-the-wall designs, vinyls, textured coverings and quality designer wall coverings. If you have chosen a paper, let us know the brand and we will check its hanging instructions and how many rolls you need.

Preparing the wall

We strip old paper, repair and fill the plaster, and size or prime the wall so the new paper adheres evenly. On poor or uneven walls, cross-lining first gives a far better result. Getting this right is what stops seams lifting later.

Hanging and pattern matching

We plan the layout before the first drop goes up so the pattern is centred on the main wall and any breaks fall in the least noticeable corner. Stairwells, chimney breasts and window reveals get particular care. Seams are butted tight and cleaned as we go.

Typical timescales

A feature wall can often be done in a day. A full room typically takes one to three days depending on the paper and preparation, and stairwells longer. We will confirm with your quote.

Lincrusta installation and mural installation

Lincrusta installation needs careful handling and a properly prepared background. This deeply embossed wall covering is different from an ordinary printed paper: its relief, weight and finishing requirements influence the whole process. We discuss the design, panel layout and intended painted finish before starting, then follow the product instructions for preparation, adhesive and decoration. Corners and junctions need planning so the raised pattern reads clearly.

Mural installation starts with checking the dimensions against the actual wall. We look at the order of the panels, the position of doors and sockets, and where the main image should sit. A design that looks balanced on a screen may need a different starting point around furniture or a chimney breast. Please share the supplier’s dimensions before ordering a made-to-measure mural.

For both murals and repeating papers, batch numbers and spare material matter. We check what has arrived before hanging, including visible damage or printing differences. Keep labels and ordering details until the work is complete, as they are useful if the supplier needs to answer a question.

Fresh plaster must be sufficiently dry, and any underlying damp needs resolving first. Paper should not be used to conceal an active problem. We explain where filling or lining will help and where a more substantial repair is sensible. Once hung, the covering needs steady drying conditions rather than extra heat directed at the wall.
