Painter and Decorator in West Cambridge Villages

West of Cambridge, between the M11 and the old Roman road, are a handful of villages with very different characters. Some are old and compact, others have grown a lot in recent decades. We decorate homes across all of them.

Barton

Close to Cambridge but surrounded by countryside, Barton includes older village houses as well as more recent family homes. A decorating plan might pair repaired plaster and fresh wallpaper in an established room with simpler painted finishes in a modern extension. Where exterior render is already painted, its condition and existing coating need checking before a replacement system is chosen. Doors and windows require their own preparation, including attention to exposed edges and damaged timber. Inside, the best balance of washable paint and quieter finishes depends on daily use, so a busy entrance need not receive the same specification as a bedroom.

Coton

Older homes help shape Coton's village centre, just west of Cambridge, with later properties adding to the range of interiors. In a period room, the relationship between plaster, cornices and joinery matters as much as the wall colour. Careful repairs can leave those features legible, while lining or wallpaper offers options where the surface is uneven but sound. Exterior painting needs a separate assessment of timber condition and previous coatings. For a more recent house, clean ceiling lines and consistently finished doors can make a restrained scheme work well without adding decorative features that do not belong to the building.

Hardwick

Much of Hardwick's housing dates from the later twentieth century, although older properties remain part of the village. These family houses often lend themselves to coordinated redecoration across living rooms, stairs and bedrooms, with finishes chosen to cope with regular use. Preparation still matters on relatively modern walls: flaking paint, damaged corners and old fixing holes need dealing with before colour goes on. Outside, painted fascias, soffits and timber windows should be checked individually rather than treated as one surface. Where an older house retains traditional plaster or joinery, the specification should change to suit those materials rather than follow the newer housing.

Caldecote

Caldecote's older settlement and the more recent housing at Highfields offer quite different starting points for decoration. Contemporary interiors can take stronger colour, wallpapered focal walls or a consistent neutral scheme that replaces the original basic finish. Small cracks should be assessed before filling; movement that is still active needs more consideration than a cosmetic repair alone. In older properties, the priorities may shift towards compatible plaster repairs and preserving existing woodwork. Newly completed building work also needs adequate drying time before decoration. Planning around those conditions helps establish a sensible sequence for ceilings, walls and joinery, rather than rushing straight to the final coat.

Toft

With older cottages alongside later family homes, Toft allows room for both traditional finishes and straightforward contemporary decoration. A cottage sitting room might call for repaired plaster, lining paper and carefully painted window surrounds, while a larger modern kitchen needs a finish suited to cooking and cleaning. Exterior plans can include painted doors, timber outbuildings and fences, with products selected separately for each material. Combining several tasks can be convenient, but weather and drying times still govern the order. Before starting on an older building, we would establish what lies beneath existing coatings and whether retained features need particular protection.

Coordinating with other trades

Many homes in this area are being extended or updated, and decorating usually comes near the end. We are happy to coordinate with your builder, kitchen fitter or flooring team so the painting happens at the right moment and is not damaged by work that follows.
