Sash window restoration

Sash Window Restoration in Cambridge

Sash windows need attention to both their timber and their movement. A fresh finish should protect the frames without burying the details or joining moving parts together. Our sash window restoration work in Cambridge and the villages around Foxton begins with a close look at the condition of each window, rather than assuming every sash needs the same treatment.

If you are looking for sash window painting in Cambridge, we can discuss individual windows or a wider exterior decorating programme. We explain what can be addressed through preparation, local timber repairs and paint, and flag problems that need a joiner or another specialist before decoration begins.

Assessing the window before work begins

We inspect the accessible frame, sashes, sill and joints for failed coatings, open gaps and soft timber. We also look at how the window currently opens and closes. Water often collects around vulnerable junctions, so painting over a damaged sill without understanding its condition is unlikely to give a lasting result.

The assessment establishes the scope of the work and any access requirements. We discuss which faces of the window are included, how rooms will be protected and whether the work needs staging. On older painted surfaces, preparation must take account of the possibility of lead paint; the method needs to be appropriate rather than simply sanding everything indiscriminately.

Timber repairs that suit the damage

Localised deterioration can sometimes be removed and repaired with a suitable resin system. The remaining timber must be sound enough to support that repair. We shape repaired areas to follow the original section and prepare the surface for its coating, rather than leaving a flat patch across a moulded detail.

Where decay is extensive, or a joint is no longer secure, replacement timber may be more appropriate. We flag these areas and explain when joinery work is needed. A decorative repair should not disguise a weakness that will continue to admit water or affect the stability of the window.

Preparation, priming and painting

Loose paint is removed with care, sound edges are feathered where appropriate, and surfaces are cleaned before coating. We avoid building unnecessary paint thickness around meeting rails and sliding edges. Original profiles deserve attention too: careful preparation helps keep the lines of the joinery visible.

Bare timber and repaired areas receive a suitable primer as part of the chosen paint system. We allow the required drying time between stages and select the finish for the exposure and existing surface. Colour and sheen are agreed before painting, including any difference between the inside and outside faces.

Weather matters throughout the work. Rain, cold surfaces and strong heat can all interfere with application or drying. We plan around suitable conditions and explain any delay, rather than coating a window simply to keep to a date.

Sticking sashes and operation checks

A sash may stick because of accumulated paint, timber movement or a mechanical fault. Painted-shut sashes need careful assessment before any attempt to release them; forcing the frame can damage timber or glass. We discuss what appears to be causing the problem and the limits of the decorating work.

We check and flag visible cord and pulley issues, rather than assuming paint will improve the operation. Cord replacement is not included in our decorating scope. Where movement can be checked safely, we take care that fresh coatings do not bridge moving sections and explain when the finish is ready for normal use.

Frequently asked questions

Can you assess just one troublesome sash?

Yes. We can look at an individual window and explain whether local preparation and repair are sensible or whether joinery attention is needed first.

Does restoration include replacing sash cords?

Our decorating work does not include replacing cords. We check and flag cord and pulley concerns so these can be addressed separately.

What happens if a sash has been painted shut?

We assess the paint build-up and window condition before discussing careful release. We do not force a stuck sash or promise that painting alone will solve it.

Can the interior and exterior faces be different colours?

Yes, we can discuss separate colours and appropriate finishes for each face. For listed buildings, check any proposed change with your local planning authority first.
