Older cottages and farmhouses give Fowlmere a different set of decorating needs from its later family houses. Traditional plaster needs checking before a paint system is chosen; where lime is present, a compatible breathable finish matters more than simply covering marks. Interior work can include repairing small areas of plaster, lining uneven walls and repainting doors without losing their moulded detail. Outside, sound preparation of timber helps protect windows and entrances from the weather. For more recent homes, washable hallway paint and neatly finished woodwork offer a practical starting point for a broader change of colour.
Shepreth
In Shepreth, period cottages sit alongside more recent houses, so the right preparation depends on the building rather than its postcode. A cottage interior may need gentle plaster repairs and careful wallpaper removal, while a newer living room can benefit from a clean colour change and sharper woodwork. Painting doors, window frames and other exterior timber also provides an opportunity to spot failing coatings before they let water reach the wood. We can discuss a single room or a larger programme, choosing finishes around the surfaces already there and how you use each space.
Barrington
Around Barrington's broad village green, historic cottages and thatched roofs make the character of the older buildings especially apparent. Decorating these homes calls for restraint: retaining the shape of old joinery, avoiding unnecessary removal of sound material and matching coatings to the underlying plaster. A listed property may also require consent for proposed alterations, so that should be checked before work is agreed. Away from the oldest houses, family homes can suit tougher paints in busy rooms and fresh wallpaper in quieter spaces. Exterior decoration should focus on sound timber and suitable preparation, not simply another coat over damaged paint.
Orwell
The rising ground around Orwell and the older streets near its church provide a varied setting for cottages and later homes. Weather-facing doors and window frames deserve close inspection, particularly where paint has split at joints or along sills. Repairing the affected wood before repainting gives the finish a sound base. Indoors, older rooms may suit lined walls, carefully repaired plaster and restrained colours that work with existing beams or joinery. More modern layouts offer scope for bolder wallpaper, painted shelving and durable finishes through connecting spaces, with the extent of preparation decided after looking at the actual surfaces.
Haslingfield
From older houses around the centre to twentieth-century family housing, Haslingfield offers plenty of scope for different interior treatments. Stairs and connecting hallways need coatings that tolerate regular handling, whereas a dining room might suit wallpaper or a softer painted finish. Original skirtings and panelled doors are worth preparing carefully so layers of paint do not obscure their detail. In a period house, we would check the condition and type of plaster before recommending repairs. Larger decorating plans can be divided into manageable stages, allowing bedrooms and living areas to remain available while other rooms are being prepared and finished.
Hauxton
Hauxton combines an older village setting with substantial recent housing, bringing quite different surfaces into the same decorating brief. On a newer property, the priorities might be improving a basic painted finish, introducing colour and treating small, stable settlement cracks after checking their condition. A period home needs a closer look at existing plaster and joinery before sanding or filling begins. Kitchens and entrances benefit from finishes selected for cleaning and everyday wear. For exterior work, we assess painted timber and render separately, since a coating suitable for one surface is not automatically the right choice for the other.
Newton
Smaller rooms, older joinery and irregular walls can make Newton's period homes rewarding places to decorate, alongside the village's later houses. Rather than trying to make every surface look newly built, careful preparation can retain the features that give an older interior its character. Options include plaster repairs, lining paper and a considered finish on skirtings, doors and window surrounds. Exterior timber requires a different approach, with loose paint removed and local damage assessed before recoating. Where a building is listed, any necessary permissions should be settled first; the decorating specification can then reflect both its construction and the owner's plans.
Thriplow
Cottages and farmhouses form part of Thriplow's historic character, while more modern homes bring different layouts and materials. Uneven walls in an older bedroom may benefit from lining paper before the final wallpaper, provided the plaster beneath is sound. Traditional woodwork can be repaired and repainted without sanding away its distinctive edges. Outside, doors, windows and painted garden buildings need a coating suited to their condition and exposure. For a newer family house, a coordinated palette across adjoining rooms can bring continuity, with washable finishes reserved for areas that take the most knocks rather than used indiscriminately throughout.
Why local matters
Working so close to home means less travel time and more flexibility. If the weather turns on an exterior job, we can pick up again quickly rather than rearranging a long trip. It also means our reputation in these villages is something we see every day, and we take it seriously.
